Typically when I record speeches I tap into the DJ’s sound system, and as a backup put a small Sony recorder in a sleeve and slide it on the handheld microphone. But sometimes when I want extra protection, when the feed isn’t super clear or I just have a certain feeling, I mic the speaker’s with my own lapel mics.
I did this at Danielle and Kaden’s wedding a few weeks ago and immediately after the speeches they went into first dances. Danielle’s dad still had his mic on and we picked up this little gem:
Doesn’t this fourteen second interaction tell you everything about their relationship? It makes me wish I had a mics on everyone all day. Who know’s what great moments could be found.
